This long narrow home is located on a heavily wooded ridge overlooking miles of gently rolling hills. However, the traditional gable roof restricted the views of the landscape and created a long unbroken roof line. We proposed a new upsweeping gable roof on the back of the house with a cantilevered second level floor extending into it to take full advantage of the dramatic views. Adjacent to the gable we added a seven sided home office surrounded with windows. Above the office is a large open deck accessed through the screened porch. On the front of the house we added a curved wooden and copper canopy at the entrance and a reverse shed dormer adjacent to it to break up the long roof line. The idea of an “urban cabin’ was developed by creating a modern building that blended into the landscape and used modern detailing of traditional materials.
